Mitchell Layton, Co-Director of Washington Photo Workshops

Mitchell has been a part of the Washington D.C. and Baltimore sports scene for over 25 years. He has distinguished himself as an excellent photographer known for his creativity, reliability and dedication to service. His long-term relationships with the Washington Wizards, Washington Capitals and Georgetown University’s Men’s basketball program have established him as the area’s leading sports photographer. He is published regularly in USA Today and ESPN The Magazine. and has been seen in Newsweek, U.S. News and World Report, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Life Magazine, T.V. Guide as well as many national and international trade publications 


Jeffrey Snyder, Co-Director of Washington Photo Workshops

Jeffrey has been working as and with professional photographers for over 30 years. Jeff was the lead contact at Penn Camera for over 27 years, handling such clients as, Reuters News Pictures, Getty Images, The Washington Post, Agence France Presse and USA Today. Recently, Jeff has joined Adorama Camera's Professional SalesDivision and continues to work with Proffesional photographers worldwide. His expertise & technical abilities have gained the confidence of photojournalists worldwide.  He is currently a contributing photographer to The Blood-Horse magazine and has covered The Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, Belmont Stakes as well as The Breeders Cup Championships.  Jeff recently was a finalist for the coveted National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s Eclipse Award in Photography, and won the Maryland Jockey Club’s Jerry Frutkoff award for Photography in 2003. Jeff has photographed events such as Super Bowl’s, Major League Baseball, Movie Premiere’s, Concerts, and MTV Video Music Awards to his son’s little league games.


Jamie Squire, Getty Images USA, Staff Photographer

Jamie has covered many top worldwide events including Super Bowls, World Series, NBA and Stanley Cup Finals, Golf and Tennis Majors, the Kentucky Derby, World Cup Soccer, and 5 Olympic Games (2 Winter and 3 Summer). He often shoots on assignment for specific editorial clients such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, ESPN Magazine, Time, and Sports Illustrated. Jamie has done commercial and advertising work for major corporations including Coca Cola, Nike, Reebok, and USA Network. His numerous awards include first prize in the documentary picture story category awarded by the New York Press Photographers Association in 2001, and several selections to the Communication Arts Photo Annual. 


Jonathan Newton, The Washington Post, Staff Photographer

In a 18-year career, Jonathan Newton has been with The Washington Post, St. Petersburg Times, Atlanta Journal and Constitution, and The Nashville Banner. Newton has covered almost every major sporting event in America from the Olympic games, World series, Super Bowl, The Masters, The Preakness and, major college bowl games and thousands of regular sporting events. But his love is covering High School sports. "I love the pageantry of sports," he says. "I love all the emotion." Newton has earned numerous awards, including White House Press Photographers Association contest, three time Georgia Photographer of the Year and the NPPA Morris Berman Award for the advancement of photojournalism.


Simon Bruty, Sports Illustrated, Staff Photographer

Now based in Washington, DC, Simon is a staff photographer with Sports Illustrated. Mainly a feature photographer, Simon has also made a name for himself by finding the unusual within the usual. His pictures have been used in major ads for Rolex, Canon, Nike, and Reebok. In 2003 an image of Simon's was chosen as one of the World's 50 Greatest Sports Photographs by The London Observer.


Skip Dickstein, Albany-Times Union

Skip Dickstein has been a staff photographer with the Albany Times Union in Albany, New York for thirty years and the Director of the Photojournalism section of the Churchill Downs Journalism Student Workshop for the past 5 years. In 1996 Dickstein received the prestigious Eclipse Award for Excellence in Thoroughbred Photography in North America presented by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association as well as the Sovereign Award for Thoroughbred Photography in Canada.


Porter Binks, Photo Editor, Sports Illustrated

Porter Binks began his journalism career in 1968 as a copy boy at The Chattanooga Times. In 1982, after eight months with the Associated Press, Binks moved to USA TODAY as a sports picture editor and photographer. During his 16 years at USA TODAY, he photographed four summer Olympics and 16 Masters golf tournaments, as well as many other assignments, including Capitol Hill and The White House. In 1998, Binks joined Sports Illustrated as the college basketball picture editor, where he also handles auto racing and assists with golf. Among his freelance assignments have been the last six Eco-Challenge adventure races.


Chris Butcher, Digital Imaging Consultant

Chris has been training photographers on ever changing digital cameras and software for over 10 years. Creating workflows to improve image quality and simplify the process of creating professional images. Chris’s creative and effective solutions are being used for imaging professionals in medical, police, photojournalism, commercial, aerial, wedding, portrait, and more. He is always looking for new tools and techniques that help photographers spend more time being creative not frustrated.
